Q: Do scientists require any different attributes to be successful in life sciences nowadays?
A: Perhaps one requires more self-confidence now than was required 40 or 50 years ago in order to succeed... But that issue aside, if one expects to be a successful scientist, one still needs to be curious; one still needs to work hard; one still has to be willing to follow up unexpected results; and one still needs to be a good communicator both orally and with the written word.
Q: Should graduate students be trained differently now?
A: ...graduate students' knowledge tends to be extremely narrow and extremely focused. They don't like going to seminars and meetings that are outside of their own area of interest, not realizing that facts and ideas that come flying in from the left field might lead to "Aha!" moments for their own experiments.

I definetly agree with the above.
